Bonterra Vineyards is located in Hopland, Mendocino County California. They are dedicating to producing wine with organic grapes. Their 2009 riesling is sourced from primarily Lake County fruit, with some home-grown Mendocino fruit thrown in for good measure. The fruit is certified by CCOF. The wine offers aroma of stone fruits of peach and apricot, smelling slightly sweet. On the palate the wine is fresh and spritzy. It is off dry in style meaning there is residual sugar present but it is well balanced by acidity. The result is a fresh, pleasant wine that may not deliver a massive mouthfeel or soaring finish but worthy nonetheless (and a good value to boot). Drink young (and like us with a long pour)! 86 points.

Girasole (pronounced "jee-ra-sol-ay") Vineyards Pinot Noir is made from certified organic grapes grown in the rolling benchlands of the Redwood Valley, CA appellation of Mendocino County. All of the grapes that go into their wines are estate grown, and hand-picked from family owned and operated vineyards that date back to the 1950's. Certification requires that their grapes are grown without conventional pesticides or herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation. Very dark extraction for a pinot noir. Nose of cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, cola. Fruit delivers some juiciness in concert with drying tannin structure in the mouth. Great value for a California Pinot Noir! 84 points.

Atrea The Choir 2009 comes from Saracina Ranch Winery & Vineyards in Mendocino County. The grapes are grown and certified biodynamic. This is a big wine, combining Rousanne and Viognier in concerto harmony. The wine is bright and bold with deep gold and a green tinge in the class. The nose is full of exotic aromas: ginger, peach, pear, jasmine and beeswax. Rousanne brings the fullness and weight, while the Viognier infuses the floral aromatics. In the mouth this is a big wine, providing weight and substance on the tongue and a soaring finish powering through the back of the mouth. For some it will feel hot but not to worry, chill well to dampen this effect. The Choir does indeed sing. 89 points.

Atrea Old Soul 2006 is from Saracina Ranch Winery & Vineyards in Mendocino Count. The grapes are grown in organically farmed vineyards. While zinfandel and syrah blends are not too unusual, Old Soul adds malbec and petite sirah, giving it a big, extracted, dense and tannic structure. The fruit is deep and jammy raspberry, blackberry with spice. Given it's age, an '06 vintage, it is surprisingly dry. Old Soul is delivers versatility - pleasing jammy notes that will appeal to many California red wine drinkers; but with tannins and structure that will appeal to foodies. Get out a big glass for this big wine - it will kick your ass. 89 points.

Apparently OWR host Winston Jones believes Mendocino County is the place where organic wine dreams are made. (Whether he meant naughty or nice ones is unclear). What is clear however is that Saracina Sauvignon Blanc 2008 is blended from a number of certified organic vineyards in Mendocino County. The wine is far from a single dimensional grapefruit dominant sauvignon blanc. Once a slight stinky musty stench blew off, our noses were greeted by peach, melon, lime, citrus and even a hint of olives (apparently the ranch grows olive trees too)! This blend is round, balanced and fresh. Delicious on the nose and mouth. Delivers a healthy dose of minerality that helps connect the drinker to sense of place. In an homage to the Mendocino farmer, Winston dons a sweet hat while enjoying a wine that is soft yet vibrant. This wine is not only a solid cocktail wine but also would love to be paired with some food. 90 points.

Paul Dolan Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 is produced from CCOF certified organic grapes, 70% of which are also certified biodynamic by Demeter. Paul Dolan is arguably one of the highest quality organic wine producers in the world and certainly a leader in the organic and biodynamic wine movement in California. This wine has a purity about it - one that allows you to actually get a sense of the soil in which the grapes were grown. Winston believes the depth of color makes him think good things are about to come in his glass! Indeed there is a concentration of dark fruit, light oak, spice, nutmeg. It is enough to put Jennifer "The Savvy Sommelier" into a trance. A small amount of Syrah and Petite Sirah is added to provide the wine a juicier and likely more broadly appealing quality. While this wine will be embraced by those with a California palate, it has finesse that the French could love.

A Sweet Malbec from Yorkville Cellars in Yorkville Highlands AVA of Mendocino County. Apparently, the winery was barrel sampling their single varietal Malbec, sourced from the organically certified Rennie Vineyards, and decided to make a dessert wine. The result is a very unique sweet but not syrupy play on Malbec, a Bordeaux varietal. Despite the sweetness, the fruit maintains a purity of Malbec expression. It posseses the aromatics you might find in a white wine but clearly is a red wine. A wonderfully complex set of smells and tastes characterize this wine: cherry, boysenberry, violet, tea, french oak, vanilla, cola. This is a versatile dessert wine. Perfect with cheesecake, vanilla ice cream or other lighter desserts such as fruit tarts. Would also serve as an aperitif or wonderful compliment to a cheese course. 90 Points.
