Bonterra Vineyards is located in Hopland, Mendocino County California. They are dedicating to producing wine with organic grapes. Their 2009 riesling is sourced from primarily Lake County fruit, with some home-grown Mendocino fruit thrown in for good measure. The fruit is certified by CCOF. The wine offers aroma of stone fruits of peach and apricot, smelling slightly sweet. On the palate the wine is fresh and spritzy. It is off dry in style meaning there is residual sugar present but it is well balanced by acidity. The result is a fresh, pleasant wine that may not deliver a massive mouthfeel or soaring finish but worthy nonetheless (and a good value to boot). Drink young (and like us with a long pour)! 86 points.

Girasole (pronounced "jee-ra-sol-ay") Vineyards Pinot Noir is made from certified organic grapes grown in the rolling benchlands of the Redwood Valley, CA appellation of Mendocino County. All of the grapes that go into their wines are estate grown, and hand-picked from family owned and operated vineyards that date back to the 1950's. Certification requires that their grapes are grown without conventional pesticides or herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, bioengineering, or ionizing radiation. Very dark extraction for a pinot noir. Nose of cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, cola. Fruit delivers some juiciness in concert with drying tannin structure in the mouth. Great value for a California Pinot Noir! 84 points.

Atrea The Choir 2009 comes from Saracina Ranch Winery & Vineyards in Mendocino County. The grapes are grown and certified biodynamic. This is a big wine, combining Rousanne and Viognier in concerto harmony. The wine is bright and bold with deep gold and a green tinge in the class. The nose is full of exotic aromas: ginger, peach, pear, jasmine and beeswax. Rousanne brings the fullness and weight, while the Viognier infuses the floral aromatics. In the mouth this is a big wine, providing weight and substance on the tongue and a soaring finish powering through the back of the mouth. For some it will feel hot but not to worry, chill well to dampen this effect. The Choir does indeed sing. 89 points.

It is unusual to see syrah from Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, but Bradford Mountain makes us wish we saw more. The grapes are organically certified from Grist Vineyard located 1,200 feet above the valley. The nose exudes dark fruit: blackberry, boysenberry and Winston's favorite former mayor marionberry. It also gives us chocolate and a mossy note (or dry peat). It is aging well and is a stellar example of Syrah showing new world California sensitivities and boldness without losing the old world Rhône minerality. 91 points.

Bonny Doon Vinho Grinho is a playful blend of loureiro and albariño 2009. The wine is Demeter-certified biodynamic® from the Ca' del Solo Vineyard in Monterey County, California. Vinho Grinho is a play on Vinho Verde, a Portuguese white made with loureiro. It's like they've bottled the terroir from the Iberian peninsula and let it loose in Monterey. On the nose, the wine jumps forth with citrus, lemon-oil, peach, floral, and herb garden (bay leaf and thyme in particular). It smells like a fresh morning. The palate is worthy of Jenny's large gulp - fresh spring water infused with peach and citrus. This wine is young and vibrant and should be consumed as such! 88 points.

Think Tank Pinot Noir 2008 is produced from organically certified, single vineyard grapes from La Encantada Vineyard located in the Santa Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County California. Think Tank Wine Company is unique in their focus on creating high quality wines from select single-vineyard locations that foster environmental stewardship. Think Tank has found that La Encantada Vineyard in Santa Rita Hills AVA is a wonderful place to grow pinot noir. The climate and soil is ideal and the valley's situation serves to draw the cool air in from the Pacific ocean, which the pinot grapes love. (We know as Winston talks to pinot grapes). There is a depth to this wine: dark, wild cherry, pomegranate and raspberry fruit; cola; deep rich clay; strong but not stern acidity. All-in-all a fine wine today that lacks some of the subtle finesse of higher-end Pinots. Hopefully this will come with some age. 88 points.

Grgich Hills Napa Valley Zinfandel 2007 is made from estate grown biodynamic-certified zinfandel grapes in the heart of Napa Valley, California. Zinfandel from Napa Valley is rarer today than it has been historically, which is a shame based on this wine. This zinfandel is complex on the nose, plenty of dark berries akin to a berry compote. There is a dusty aspect, an iron element and spiciness with pepper. In contrast to many zinfandels that are straightforward and highly quaffable, this zinfandel makes Winston Jones "think before he drinks". Part of the pleasure of a good wine is the expectation it sets on the nose, making the experience in the mouth all the more pleasurable and interesting. This wine delivers a purity of fruit: blackberry, raspberry. It is spicy but not overdone. And, perhaps most surprisingly, it has tannic structure which is rarely expected in many California zinfandels. As such this wine could age even another 2 years and you could expect some softening and additional richness added to it's profile. Winston pleads with Dry Creek fans to come back to Napa and try something different with this wine. "One damn good wine." 90 points.

Bonny Doon Albariño 2009 is made from Demeter-certified biodynamic® grapes from Monterey County, California. Albariño hails from Rias Baixas in northwestern Spain. California is blessed to be able to grow unique international varietals - at least under the skilled hands of good farmers and winemakers. This Albariño has the calling cards of what you would find in Spain, sipping with your oysters and seafood. It is fresh and vibrant with an ever-so slight green tinge which is indicative of the varietal and youth of the wine. It appears bright which reflects the level of acidity. The taste is consistent with the nose on this wine - lime, melon, crème fraiche, orange peel and tangerine. (Citrus tends to be the fruit calling card of Albariño). You can smell and taste a saline quality in this wine, like the scent of light, misty spray from the sea, reminding us of Monterey in a glass. If you find youself sea-side with this wine and oysters, considering yourself blessed. 89 points.

Grgich Hills Napa Valley Fumé Blanc 2008 is made from organic and Demeter certified biodynamic grapes from the much beloved Napa Valley, California. Grgich Hills' tradition and reputation of excellence shows through. They should be commended for adhering to sustainable and organic practices in the middle of Napa Valley, where there is much commercial pressure on producers to have consistently high quality and high yields year in and year out. Fumé blanc is a term coined by Robert Mondavi in 1968 to help promote Sauvignon Blanc in California. Fumé which is smoke in French, describes the influence of oak imparted to the wine. The wine has a very pleasing nose of lemon, lemongrass, melon reminiscent of sauvignon blanc with a riper more tropical profile than is typical. The wine delivers a bright and lively mouthfeel with a long finish. Could this wine be the missing link between chardonnay and sauvignon blanc? We're not sure but it will do well as a cocktail wine (even for hardcore chardonnay drinkers) and will serve as a splendid complement to lighter dishes such as fish, chicken and pasta. A versatile wonder. 90 points.

Atrea Old Soul 2006 is from Saracina Ranch Winery & Vineyards in Mendocino Count. The grapes are grown in organically farmed vineyards. While zinfandel and syrah blends are not too unusual, Old Soul adds malbec and petite sirah, giving it a big, extracted, dense and tannic structure. The fruit is deep and jammy raspberry, blackberry with spice. Given it's age, an '06 vintage, it is surprisingly dry. Old Soul is delivers versatility - pleasing jammy notes that will appeal to many California red wine drinkers; but with tannins and structure that will appeal to foodies. Get out a big glass for this big wine - it will kick your ass. 89 points.
