Hedges Family Estate Red Mountain 2007 is a blend of biodynamic and sustainably farmed grapes; predominantly Merlot (56%) Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) with Syrah (8%) and Cabernet Franc (6%). Red Mountain is the smallest AVA in WA. This is a wonderfully complex wine. Dark purple in color with aromas of juicy ripe fruit of cherry, blackberry and cassis combined with clove & cocoa. The palate is concentrated with black cherry, cranberry, toast, licorice with hints of smoke, earth and caramel. A full, lush mouth-feel with plenty of structure & a long, slightly earthy finish. 91 Points.

  1. Hi Guys,

Love your video reviews all the way down here in sunny Australia. I’m working on spreading the word of organics and bio dynamics too. Soon Ill post some video reviews too to show case some of the awesome Aussie and Kiwi wines.

    Sincere in our cheers!

    Jonathon & Kati

  2. There have been a dearth of organic Aussie wines to date. Send ‘em our way: http://www.organicwinereview.com/for-wineries/

I think you need to check your facts on this wine. None of their vineyards are farmed organic. They have 1 vineyard in this blend that is farmed biodynamic beginning in 2007, but is not certified. And since this is a 2007 vintage it would not qualify. All of the other vineyards in the blend are farmed conventional. This is also just farming. All the winemaking is conventional.

  4. Patrick:

Thanks for the heads-up. We’ll research it further right now.

    Cheers,
    Brent

  5. Based on OWR’s classifications, we have re-posted this wine under “Organic Grapes (uncertified).

    To clarify from Christophe Hedges:

“Hedges Family Estate vineyard: 2007 biodynamic farming commenced. No certification until 2011, most likely around march, by dememter. 40 acres

Magdalena Vineyard: Biodynamic. Same as above. 5 acres

Bel’Villa Vineyard: non certified organic/sustainable farming since 2007 40 acres
Les Gosses vineyard: same as above. 15 acres
Rockwell Brown Vineyard: same as above 20 acres

We don’t believe in making biodynamic wines or organic wines, just farming.

We are going the certification route for Biodynamic only, because it is a trademark of Demeter. We will not put this certification on our labels, as we do not think of it as a selling point. We will not go for organic or sustainable certification, as this is nothing more than USDA guidlines, a poor overseer of these farming practices.

While we love the effects of Biodynamic farming for environmental reasons, we moved in this farming direction because it provided us with a set of guidelines for farming our land to improve the sense of place in our wines and to decrease water usage. This is our primary focus. We are not concerned about crafting perfect wine, just capturing terroir and using less water. Terroir is not ratable.

Thank you for your review on the wine. ”

    Christophe Hedges

  6. Im drinking some of this right now…I had my first bottle at a nice restuarant and jumped once I saw another bottle at my local BevMo. I highly recommend it. It gets even better the further into the bottle you go.
